Coffee® by Sweden

Den svenske kaffekultur blev kendt over hele verden efter Stig Larssons Millennium-triologi, hvor forbrydelser blev opklaret med hjælp fra utallige kopper kaffe.

Og sådan ser kaffeforbruget ud for mange i Norden. Et par kopper kaffe om morgenen, en kop til hvert møde på kontoret (og vi har bestemt mange møder hver dag ;)) og dagen sluttes af med en kop kaffe efter aftensmaden. Ja, kaffedrikningen stopper aldrig.

Fra idé til et skandinavisk stilikon

En espressomaskine i julegave blev startskuddet for en rejse, der startede tilbage i 2011 og endte med Sjöstrand’s elskede espressomaskine. Kapsler i metal og maskiner i plast var hverken æstetisk eller etisk tiltalende. Det er grunden til, at idéen om at lave kapselkaffe til en bæredygtig og skandinavisk designoplevelse blev skabt. Så Sjöstrand valgte ikke bare at lave kaffe, men også at designe deres egen espressomaskine.

Grundtanken var skandinavisk minimalistisk design, da de første skitser af Sjöstrand’s kaffemaskine blev lavet. Det primære var de rette linjer, og så blev håndtaget tilføjet for at skabe følelsen af, at man selv en espresso, selvom det er en kapselmaskine. Stålrækværket på toppen er et designelement, der også gør det muligt at stille et par kopper på toppen uden at risikere, at de falder ned under kaffebrygningen. Gamle traditionelle italienske espressomaskiner har inspireret til designet af kaffeudløbet, og dets fremtoning får en til at tænke på god kvalitetskaffe.

Meget tidligt i designprocessen blev det valgt at bruge rustfrit stål til at fremstille maskinen. Det er et naturligt materiale, som er meget elegant med dets skinnende spejl-finish. Et af de mere centrale designelementer var logopladen med Sjöstrand’s brand. For at fremtone maskinens robusthed blev skrue pladen skruet på. Det skulle minde om gamle husholdningsapparater, hvor det robuste skilt giver et indtryk af power og kvalitet, og at intet blev overladt til tilfældighederne.

Udover hårdt arbejde er udvikling af en ny elektronisk enhed ekstremt udfordrende. At finde den rigtige fabrikant til kaffemaskinen var en kæmpe udfordring, og arbejdsprocessen startede derfor på internettet. Til at starte med begyndte forhandlingerne med fabrikanterne over nettet, men efterhånden blev det til mange besøg på produktionsstederne, og i dag er alle underfabrikanter, der bidrager til kaffemaskinen, besøgt.

For at sikre alle maskindelenes kvalitet var en masse test nødvendige. Sjöstrand lærte af Ethical Coffee Company, der på det tidspunkt var en partner, at 7.500 udvindinger var et godt mål for at sikre høj kvalitet. Det betyder altså; bryg 7.500 kopper med maskinen for at garantere kvaliteten. Testene blev lavet hjemme i Niklas’ vaskerum, og lugten efter brygningen af omkring 500 kopper kaffe om dagen var intens, men det gav stadig en veltilpas følelse.

I dag er Sjöstrand’s espressomaskine er stilikon mellem kapselmaskiner, og maskinen bliver solgt i over 25 lande. I begyndelsen blev den også solgt under andre brands, men det patenterede design er Sjöstrand’s eget. Det fantastiske resultat af en julegave og en fast overbevisning om at ændre kapselkaffe til et bæredygtigt koncept med et elegant design til hverdagsluksus!

Sjöstrand arbejder hårdt for miljøet!

Sjöstrand-familien vokser, og det viser, at vores bæredygtige design og miljøvenlige alternativ til kapselkaffe er fremtiden!

I et forsøg på at holde den globale opvarmning på 2°C er vi nødt til at reducere vores udledning af klimaskadelige gasser ud i atmosfæren, mens vi samtidig prøver at dræne atmosfæren for noget af det kuldioxid, vi allerede har udledt. Derfor er det simpelthen ikke nok kun at være klimaneutral.

Sjöstrand Coffee Concept var en af de første kapselkaffe-virksomheder til at opsætte mål om at mindske den miljømæssige påvirkning. I dag er der flere gode og bæredygtige muligheder på markedet, men der er stadig arbejde at gøre, og vi vil fortsætte med at gøre vores bedste for at fuldføre vores mission.

Ingen er for små til at bidrage og sammen kan vi gøre en forskel!

Sjöstrand and sustainability – a mini interview

In a mini-interview with Sjöstrand’s founders Jenny Svensson and Niklas Gustavsson, we talk about sustainability and Sjöstrand’s collaboration with Vi-skogen, a project to offset carbon emissions by planting trees.


Sjöstrand’s basic idea is based on sustainability. Tell me more!

We want to influence consumption; in our case it is about offering environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives for an existing concept that is well established in the market. When we founded Sjöstrand Coffe Concept, we focused on developing a design that could fit into as many environments as possible, in order to achieve sustainability. At the same time as every day we focus on improving the quality of everything we do. Together, design and quality will minimize a wear and tear mentality and offer products with as long a life as possible.

Coffee and our coffee capsules are a consumer product and by far the most sustainable solution for the environment is composting.  We must, as far as possible, strive for the return of what comes out of the earth to earth. The capsule is produced with energy from solar, wind, water and biogas, we carbon compensate for parts of our transports, our coffee is 100% organically grown and our capsule is made of bark and other plant fiberand is therefore compostable. The capsule becomes soil within 23 weeks in a regular garden compost.

SJÖSTRAND HAS COMPENSATED FOR PARTS OF ITS TRANSPORT TOGETHER WITH VI-SKOGEN SINCE 2016. WHAT DOES YOUR COOPERATION MEAN?

We forest offers companies a very effective way to carbon offset their carbon footprint, through certified carbon dioxide storage in trees and agricultural land. This means that companies can calculate their CARBON emissions, especially through their transports. To then invest in tree planting through the Vi forest, when trees bind carbon dioxide, to an equal or greater extent in order to carbon compensate for their emissions.

WHY DID YOUR CHOICE FALL ON WORKING WITH THE VI FOREST?

We-forest makes a difference for those most affected by climate change. The organization works in four countries around Lake Victoria in East Africa: Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. Carbon offsetting together with the Vi forest brings many benefits – it combats poverty when tree planting creates jobs and it improves the environment when trees and agricultural land bind carbon dioxide and thus reduce our climate impact.

The people most affected by climate change can, thanks to our support and the work of the Vi forest, increase their harvests and adapt to a changing climate.

WHAT DOES SJÖSTRAND’S SUSTAINABILITY WORK LOOK LIKE IN OTHER RESPECTS?

We try to avoid printed material as far as possible by working electronically. On the printed material that we must use, for example, our cartons, we are looking for the best and environmentally friendly alternatives possible. For example, FSC-marked or recycled. We travel public transport to work and attend trade fairs such as Matology to spread our messages.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE FROM AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUSTAINABILITY PERSPECTIVE?

We were one of the first companies with products in the capsule coffee segment that focused on sustainability and the environment with the goal of achieving as little impact on the environment as possible. We had a grand vision of changing an entire coffee segment. We have come a little bit along the way and today there are several good and sustainable options on the market, but not the largest. There are fantastic challenges now and in the future regarding the environment and sustainability and we hope to be able to influence in a positive direction for a long time to come. No one is too small to contribute and it is together that we can make a difference!

Introducing three new types of coffee! 2018

N°7 Ethiopian Sidamo Single origin is a medium roasted, smooth coffee with hints of dark chocolate, citrus and cherries. Perfect as an espresso!

Finally, all types of coffee are back in stock again. And at the same time, we are pleased to announce that we have taken sustainability to a new level! Our new capsule is the world’s first home compostable capsule and decomposes in a garden compost in about 23 weeks. This is something we have been working towards for a long time, and it is an important part of Sjöstrands journey towards a more sustainable world!
